The best way to avoid drunk driving is to prevent it from happening. Before you set out to drink, it is helpful to know the following tips for minimizing your risks of driving while drunk.

8 TIPS TO HELP AVOID DRUNK DRIVING!

Eat before you drink. A lack of food in your system causes you to become drunk much faster and it’s also very risky, as this approach can lead to poor concentration, nutritional deficits, impaired judgment and long-term serious health effects and diseases.

Set a limit. Use a BAC calculator to determine an approximate amount of alcohol that you can safely drink while staying under the legal limit to drive. Stick to your limit.

Pace your drinks. Never drink more than one alcoholic beverage in an hour and stop drinking at least one hour before you anticipate driving.

Drink a water or non-alcoholic beverage between each alcoholic drink.

Only bring cash and limit the amount. Only bring enough cash into the bar to pay for the drinks that you have set your limit at. Leave credit cards and extra cash in your vehicle in case you need to pay for a taxi later.

Avoid drinking shots. The average amount of alcohol in one shot of liquor is approximately the same as a 12 oz. beer.

Have a backup ride. Be prepared by saving the phone number to a cab company or designated driver service in your phone. Save the number as “1 driver” so that it is easy to find in your contacts after you have been drinking.
